Tips That Help You With Game Design

There are some game design tips that help you build incredible games. Let’s begin:

1. Design With Users in Mind

Great user experience (UX) is important to provide users with enjoyable gameplay. The Menus and interface are too difficult to navigate or are over-or-under designed can make players leave the game. The best thing that you can and should do is keep the game simple, intuitive, and consistent.

2. Make a Game Design Document (GDD)

A game design document is a document that has all the important aspects of your game. If you want to build your game with friends or colleagues, the GDD helps you understand and get on board with the vision of your project. You can also use it to help pitch the game ideas to your superiors.

Your Game Design Document should include:

  • The idea or concept
  • Genre
  • Story and characters
  • Gameplay
  • Core game mechanics
  • Level and world design
  • Art and/or sketches
  • Monetization strategy

A GDD is a great way to develop games, identify potential risks, and let you see which resources to spend time on.

3. Get to Know About Basic Game Design Principles

Learning about basic game design principles can help you build a video game that’s fun and engaging. After you’ve compiled the game mechanic, here are some gaming principles to keep in mind.

  • Stick to One Core Game Mechanism

To design a great game, make sure that you’re using just one core game mechanic. A game mechanic will outline what the player will do throughout the game.

Let’s take the example of Pacman, where the only motive of the game is to eat all the dots without being captured by the ghosts.

  • Make Your Game Easy to Understand

If your game is too complicated, players won’t play it. Even if you’re targeting experienced players, keep the rules simple, and don’t bombard the players with them.

Make it easy for players to learn new skills and techniques.

4. Choose the Software and Skills You Need

The type of game you want to make is dependent on the software you choose to build the game. Bigger gaming studios have huge teams and can use all kinds of software. But smaller studios have limited software access. If you’re making a game all by yourself, then you will need to learn to code and design.

Here are 5 free tools that you can use to design the game:

  • Unity 3D
  • Unreal Engine 4
  • GameMaker Studio 2
  • Construct 3
  • Godot Engine

If you’re building a basic game, then you can do so with basic coding skills. Graphic games need a bit more understanding of coding. Based on the type of game you want to make, you’ll have to increase your skills.

5. Find Your Game’s Hook

What’s special about your game? Every game always has that one “X Factor” that makes their games famous for the players. It could be the storyline, the characters, the mechanics, and even the aesthetics. But you need to find the game’s hook.

This is something that every business should consider early on in the project as it will make sure that your game is loved by fans all over the world. You can go back to your original game idea and think about what made it appealing in the first place.

6. Start the Building Process

Now comes the fun part. Building your game is a trial-and-error process. During the building process, you may understand that the ideas you thought may not be as great as you thought. Just make sure to keep testing your game prototypes throughout the development phase.

Just keep one thing in mind you’re making the game for a huge audience, and you need to keep the player’s perspective in mind. You need to consider what makes the players love a game, and what motivates them. Think about all these sectors and you may end up having good fun on your hand.

7. Sound Matters a Lot

The sound of your game makes a lot of difference. Not just visually, you should be able to entice your audience with sounds as well. If you don’t have the right sounds, it can ruin the gameplay experience for some users. Sounds can also act as a cue for players to navigate through the game. More importantly, sound designs can set the mood for the game atmosphere.
